historic village in Gifu Pref. World Heritage Site
Tucked away in the mountains of Gifu, this area developed this unique style of house (called gassho-zukuri) with very thick thatch to hold up to the heavy snowfalls. Most of these buildings are in active use as homes and a few inns.
